The only Crucible match not to feature a single half-century was the first-round match between Jim Meadowcroft and David Taylor in 1983 – Taylor’s break of 43 in the opening frame was the highest.

There have been 13 Crucible matches in which the winner failed to make a half-century, all in the first round (each player’s highest break is shown in brackets alongside his name):
