Do these forums cover pool and billiards as well as snooker or not? It would broaden the appeal of the site if it did.

I think the inclusion of billiards could possibly narrow the forum's appeal ;)

Perhaps, but its a game I know almost nothing about. Its a sneaky plot to get someone to explain the rules to me :)

Pool is an odd one, you have a multitude of different games in the pool genre and also the rules change between venues, of the few people at our place that play it at lunch they all swear blind their set of rules are the official ones.
Then there is the american version, I tried it once 9ball blimey its harder to miss than to pot one, the pockets are huge, nay not huge ebloominnormous they are, but i dont see why it couldnt be included if the need was there.....

I don't see a problem discussing pool, Unless the site owner does ? For the time being I would suggest Pool is discussed in the off topic until we clarify it :)

Yea, i think if you post any other sport topics with in the off topic forum for now. Maybe in the future we can include other cue sports in the forum. Its just the name that makes be think, maybe if we were to include pool and billiards, obviously this would attract the Americans and grately expand the site, but i feel if we were to do this I would have to change the domain name to something else. Whats everyone elses view on this.

I don't see a problem in disussing pool. It broadens the forums appeal to a wider range of people. But I also agree that it is an off topic dicussion. Though I think it is possible that the off-topic section of the forum could end up being dominated by 8 and 9 ball discussion when the forums numbers increase. May I suggest a new forum topic be added?...........'Other Billiards Games' Just a suggestion.
But since we're here. I love all pocket billiard games...and maybe a little One Cusihion Billiards when i've got my eye in.
With regards to the 'Official rules' of 8ball...there's no such thing. Each venue sets it's own rules. Take my garage for instance........it's a rule that, if you cause any of my Aramith Pro pool balls to leave the table and bounce on the concrete:mad: , I then have the right to punch you in the nose:p

If I was strict on the rule, I would have had to punch myself a couple of times now:o
But I can say that atleast I had to be blind drunk to knock a ball off the table.

The place I play my American pool (my number one game at the moment, still trying to get decent at snooker) has some bloody awful sets of balls... there's one set that have more chips in them than my local McDonalds. In fairness to them though, the tables are well kept and the cues are more or less straight... which is more than can be said for a lot of places here.

I have an American pool cue and a snooker cue and they both get treated better than my girlfriend. ;)
In reality, I just spend a few minutes after each session making sure they are still looking good and there isn't any film or warp developing and I also make sure they are stored properly (i.e. FLAT!).

What defines a cue to be a pool cue or a snooker cue? They're all the same to me. I use my cues which are generally all the same style for any game I want to play.
Yes, I make sure my wife is still looking good, not warped and that she is flat on her back too. Huh? OH! You were talking about cues, yes, of course. So was I;) .

Don't expect me to be an expert on Pool, I only seem to play in the pubs etc after a few drinks.. However I shall always have fun bantering with you all about the subject ;)

C'mon mate! In my opinion, you can't be just a lover of one table game, you gotta love them all.
Like cowboy, have any of you played it yet? It's an awesome game for perfecting your cueball control and caroms.
I love all billiard games. 9ball, 8ball, rotation, cowboy, snooker, straight pool,
bowliards, 1cushion billiards, cribbage. 1pocket, bank pool, just to name a few.
If anyone wants rules on just about any game...just let me know.

I love Snooker and Pool , Im just better at Snooker.. Also an avid darts player.. Reached the Semi's at work 2 years ago and lost on the double top
Moving back to snooker, me and my mate played first to 20 wins.. I was 15-5 ahead, lack lustre of form and poor finishing and the set it was 15-12, I did win 20-16 in the end :D

Moving back to darts.....LOL.........I'd expect that from a brit. And, I love darts too, though I am WAY out of practice! I could probably go around the board in 40 shots. I have my dart board set-up in my garage. I have this champ board which uses the embedded flat-wire rather than the annoying round-wire that sits on top of the board. I higly recommend it.
Anyway.....
And how long did this epic race to 20 go for? 3 weeks?? Because thats probably how long it would take me.
Where do you play? Do they charge you to play? And are the tables any good?

Think we managed to finish it in 2 weeks (going there 3 times a week)
I play at a local club (well not so local since I moved), I pay £10 a year membership fee and then pay a cheap hourly price for the tables. Sorted

The tables at my locals are usually coin-op and in dissapointing condition. You can move the cloth on some of them just by putting your hand down.
If i had the money i'd open up my own pool hall.

Well the tip of an American pool cue has a much greater circumference and is less domed (in order to play with the bigger balls) than an English pool cue which has a slightly larger tip than a snooker cue.

Ah, cool. Thanks for that. That would make all my cues snooker cues then. Except for the pub cues I have, which I couldn't care less about.
My table is not exactly designed for snooker, it's 8x4feet but the pockets are snooker table sized, not buckets like the american tables therefore I use the smaller balls.

Poor conditioned tables and cloths would get right on my.. Anyway.. You can tell the quality of a snooker club, tables kept in playable condition and no old man in his vest behind the bar scratching himself serving stale beer.. woah now Im scaring myself

Yes, it gives me the flamin irrates aswel. I've been to clubs that don't even give their tables a brush. People drink and smoke over them.

I would say that most American pool cues have 13mm tips ,
most snooker players use 9mm - 10 mm , and most 8 ball players prefer a smaller tip 8mm - 9mm
its always down to personal taste , but from my experience these are the norm.

same here !
what do you play most of pool , snooker or billiards ?
I get board very quickly if i play to much of any, i think old age is setting in.
I enjoy playing more after a long break and even more after a big break! ;)

I always used to find playing 8-Ball easy after a few frames of snooker. Angles are a breeze on a small table after playing on such big tables.
So my preference would be playing 8-Ball, but only after playing snooker ;)

just to get DM72 back in - have you ever thought that after having to put your extension on your cue early on in a frame, makes your cue feel like a toothpick that you can pot anything with afterwards? No? Try it sometime. Found any good things on eBay lately!!! A tip omce used by Ronnie..... £50. Yuor emails are blocked!! HO HO.

Heh, i missed this thread. And considering im in america, one would think this was the first place i would post in.
As for cues, the only thing that differenciates snooker cues from pool cues is the tip and shaft type. But you CAN use a snooker cue for pool and a pool cue for snooker. Im thinking of getting a snooker cue for the pool, but its so hard to find one where i am. Also, pool cues are just fancier. Look around, pool cues have all these types of inlays and all that stuff. It just shoots up the price of the cues, and its not like it makes you play any better. Being a kid, i favor plain cues more than any other cue because i just dont have an endless cash flow. Even if i could get any cue i want, it would still be something simple. One of my pet peeves is the fact that so many people think cost = skills. I know so many rich teens that have cues that are in the thousand range while i play with a cue that was only 100 dollars. The snooker cues ive seen arient fancy, but they got the job done, and thats the most important part.

nothin worse than seein a fortune wasted on a no-hoper; wonder if they feel any pressure for what they've spent.... oh yes! Thank f**k I can handle my decent cue!
as you've still probs with the feed; it's walkin on razor blades for the only match on at the moment - Davis V Greene. 9 all decider, 20-28 in Greene's favour, 4 reds left (1 on cush, 1 touchin black), loads of mistakes, really tense & excitin and 'a 20 break is looking good at the moment' - says JP. Greene's goin for a big shot, leaves nothin... Amazin cut back by Davo, blue hammers in, he's on the next red........TTFN.
people will liken this to the '85 final. COME ON STEVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
